Summer is often portrayed as a dreamy time for families—endless memories, ice cream cones, beach trips, and bedtime stories under the stars. But behind the scenes? Many parents are carrying a mental load that’s heavier than ever.
If you feel like you’re drowning in invisible labor while everyone else seems to be living their best lives, this post is for you.
What Is the Mental Load?
The "mental load" is the invisible, emotional, and logistical labor required to keep a home and family running. It’s thinking, planning, remembering, and anticipating everyone’s needs.
In the summer, it can intensify:
Keeping kids entertained without screens 24/7
Meal planning and snacks (so. many. snacks.)
Balancing your own work with childcare
Scheduling camps, playdates, and family outings
Managing emotions, tantrums, and transitions
It’s Okay If You’re Tired
You might be feeling:
Guilt for not doing enough "fun stuff"
Resentment at the lack of help or appreciation
Overwhelm from the lack of routine
Pressure to make every day magical
Here’s the truth: you are doing enough. And it’s okay to be tired.
Lighten the Load (Even a Little)
Delegate where possible: Ask for help. Share the planning. Let others carry part of the weight.
Lower the bar: Perfection is not the goal. Presence is.
Take micro-breaks: A walk around the block, a solo coffee, 10 minutes of silence.
Model emotional health: Your kids benefit more from seeing you take care of yourself than from packed calendars.
You Deserve Support Too
You’re not just keeping everyone else afloat—you deserve space to breathe too. Therapy, support groups, or even venting in a safe space can make a huge difference.
You are not invisible. You are not failing. You are seen, valued, and so deeply needed.
